Our Heritage

The first alfresco
cafe in Australia

John Schiffer arrived in Sydney from Hungary in the late 1950s. He noticed something that surprised him. Sydney had a beautiful climate and almost no outdoor dining.

In 1958, he opened 21 Espresso on Knox Street, set up tables outside, and changed how Sydneysiders thought about eating. Today, George and his daughter Cassie keep that same spirit alive.

"I've been going to 21 for as long as I can remember. It's such an institution and feels like home every time I go there. Absolutely love the soups — they are like penicillin when I feel run down. The schnitzels are legendary and hearty. Love the 21, highly recommend it!"

"We walked in without a reservation to a full house and they found us a table for four. Such a friendly, affordable and tasty place to eat — being welcomed makes this an easy place to come back to. Bravo for places like this that are still run by people that care."
